According to an article on CNN, The National Assessment of Adult Literacy:
“About one in 20 adults in the U.S. is not literate in English, meaning 11 million people lack the skills to handle many everyday tasks, a federal study shows.”
It goes on further that 19 million American adults have “below basic” skills, which means they might have problems reading something as simple as a pamphlet.

I didn’t believe that until I was at the gym the other day. This woman got on the treadmill next to me and asked me how to turn it on. Now you can either go through all the menus to pick a program or just hit the “Quick Start” button. I told her to just hit that button. I said Quick Start at least three times and she could not find the button when there are only 7 buttons total on the thing. I finally said “the circle one” and she found it. Once she started going she must have hit stop because then the display said “Paused - Press Speed Up”. She tried hitting Quick Start multiple times but couldn’t get it running again until she went through hitting all the buttons. I’ll admit everyone has their momentary mental lapses but I really think this woman was illiterate.
